Description and Requirements

With a proven track record of leading successful projects and larger teams working across a wide variety of platforms and locations. Runs successful projects without requiring hands-on coaching by the VP. Maintains deep partner relationships and leads any project with any core web and mobile technologies. Is well versed in the expectations of individual contributors and works to coach and develop their team.

As a member of our senior leadership team reporting to the Vice President, AI Data Solutions, the Director of Engineering is responsible for leading a diverse group of 30+ developers, architects, system reliability engineers and QAs.



  • Stays up to date on emerging technologies and trends and can recognize when a different technology might be a better suit
  • Advocates for platform-specific standards and patterns
  • Owns the creation and communication around application architecture and systems reliability / DevOps
  • Judges the feasibility of design decisions across the platform and works with Product Managers, Project Managers, and UI/UX design teams to optimize the solutions to deliver the most value for the customers
  • Drives product optimization and application scaling through testing automation, monitoring and analysis of product performance
  • Create a balance between immediate business needs and doing the right thing from a tech perspective to improve velocity, product usability and quality over time

Team Performance, Process Improvement & Tools

  • Advocates for and actively participates in efforts to improve engineering processes
  • Continuously seeks to learn improved ways of working and independently guides teams on improving their own software development process (including agile ceremonies, collaborative development methodologies, and product planning) while also sharing best practices with Product Managers and Engineers
  • Evaluates and leverages individual strengths on teams in order to create a division of responsibilities that leads to high throughput/quality as well as individual growth

Stakeholder Management

  • Collaborates with Product Managers, Designers, Sourcing, Operations, Payments, and Finance teams and recommends changes to products or project approaches based on research or strategy output
  • Effectively handles difficult stakeholder situations independently, while keeping senior leaders engaged and informed
  • Elevates the mood and excitement with stakeholders about the products and is able to navigate and bring positivity to stakeholders that may require convincing
  • Work closely with the Recruiting team to actively recruit and hire top talent to support the goals. Make decisions on where to source based on skillset availability, the timezone for support and leadership presence
  • Effectively coaches new hires
  • Recognizes engagement drivers and works with direct reports and team members to continuously improve engagement
  • Creates a culture of accounting for progress against team goals, learning from past work, and driving improvement in the next iteration
  • Identifies and develops strong performers and proactively manages underperformance on the team. Adheres to best practices by coaching, providing well-written positive and constructive feedback, and facilitating personal goals that help team members grow and make progress. Holds team members accountable for requesting growth-oriented feedback, providing feedback and updating goals

Desired Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering or related area or equivalent
  • 10+ years of experience in engineering management in a software development organization that was responsible for Front-End, Back-End or Full Stack Development. Technology is irrelevant (language doesn’t matter)
  • 5+ years in a SaaS company - Strong understanding of how SaaS & top technology companies operate including how to scale up and oversight of engineering groups
  • 5+ years of experience deploying to AWS and Kubernetes environments (or equivalent cloud infrastructures)
  • 5+ years in a leadership role, managing other managers - as a CTO, Vice President, Director, Principal-level Consultant, or leadership experience in a similar position
  • Experience working with agile project management
  • Experience in scaling and managing global and diverse teams - attracting, retaining, and developing talent at all levels. Understanding how to build and improve engineering culture, process, high-level tech architecture, org structure and best practices
  • Experience setting vision, strategy, and goals and then defining an organization to support
  • Successful running agile organizations at scale, with a sense of urgency to deliver quality software to solve customer problems
  • Experience leading teams of system reliability engineers (DevOps, CI/CD, Automation, Monitoring, Infra provisioning) and helping set a roadmap for ongoing improvements
  • Experience with the use of tools such as Atlassian Jira, Confluence, Slack, Sentry, Datadog, Jenkins or equivalent (with a focus on how to use and integrate into the agile SDLC processes)
