Description and Requirements

As a member of the Database Services team, the Oracle DBA (Database Administrator) will be responsible for supporting the operational elements of our customer’s database infrastructure as well as involved project delivery. The DBA is a member of a national team responsible for the daily management and administration of a variety of database technologies mainly focused on Oracle but not limited to it. The DBAs prime role is supporting the operational availability of these systems on a daily basis. The position requires excellent written and interpersonal skills to build relationships with external and internal clients at various levels. While your role is very technical in nature you will be called upon to discuss these matters to business-minded individuals inside the customer’s organization.

Additional Job Description

Responsibilities:

  • Complete full cycle Oracle instance/database management: software installation/patching; upgrade; configuration and deployment of instance/database; capacity planning; monitoring of capacity, availability, performance of the instance/database; performance analysis and tuning; backup, restore and recovery; setup replication and high availability; architect customized backup solutions; scripting jobs for automation; problem fix; escalation to DB vendor; Security management and auditing; documentation etc;

  • Interact with customers, application teams and peer support team (DBA, SA, Storage, project management etc.) for project implementation and ongoing support;

  • Take initiative to improve the performance, efficiency of the database assurance operation

  • Being cohesive to standard best practice and collaborate/coordinate with the DBA peers on change management, problem management and work management etc;

  • Take 24x7 on-call rotation and troubleshooting problem tickets and response to customer requests and change controls;

  • Support other DBA/project activities; contribution to knowledge and experience sharing

 


Required Knowledge:

  • Install/Setup and maintain Oracle database software with updates/patches

  • Install/Setup and maintain Oracle database RAC software with updates/patches

  • Analyze and performance tune all aspects of databases systems including but not limited to database software, Operating System/VW elements, Storage sub-systems, etc

  • Utilize system side performance monitoring tools as well database-specific tools such as Oracle Enterprise Manager, AWR, SQLT to tune instance and or session performance problems

  • Capacity planning and storage concept on RAID, SAN, NAS, Storage snapshots features

  • Develop and maintain accurate documentation of all areas encompassing the database infrastructure

  • Database Security – access, authentication, auditing, vulnerability assessment

  • Database Replication (Dataguard, GoldenGate) and High Availability (Real Application Clusters)

  • Perform migration and upgrade tasks while minimizing downtime

  • Perform database backups, restore, and recovery tasks using native backup and restore (RMAN), as well as utilizing storage or VM level snapshots technologies

  • Understanding and planning and executing DR planning/testing

  • SQL, PL/SQL, DTS package programming

  • Application DBA (data modeling, SQL programming/optimization) support role is a definite asset

 


Required Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong UNIX/Windows/VMware environment skills

  • Provide 24x7 on-call support

  • Assist in help desk calls utilizing Remedy

  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Good proactive planning skills and multi-tasking skills

  • Good communication skills

  • Taking initiative and ownership, delivering quality and thorough services to customers

  • Excellent team worker and good performer under minimum supervision

  • Bi-lingual (English/French) is a definite asset

  • Strong Oracle database experience

 

Required Professional Designation/Certification:

  • Undergraduate degree or diploma in Information Technology, or equivalent experience

  • Oracle Certified Professional, OCP (preferred)

  • Microsoft Certified Database Administrator or related MS Technology Certification (asset)

 

Required Experience:

  • Over 4 years’ experience as a Database Administrator working with Oracle in enterprise capacity

  • Proven experience working with Oracle 9i, 10g, 11g, 12c over the last 3 years

  • Experience on MS SQL Server in a production environment is a definite asset
