Position overview

The Data Governance Specialist shares responsibility for the data governance and data quality functions at TELUS Digital. The Data Governance Specialist drives policies and procedures for defining, maintaining, and adopting key metrics and critical data that leaders can trust to make important business decisions. The Data Governance Specialist will work with individuals at all levels of the organization in defining and evolving a library of policies, procedures, and standards and will consult multiple data teams throughout the organization to support adoption of enterprise data governance and data quality tools and procedures. The Data Governance Lead will lead data governance meetings, help set standards for data quality, and measure enterprise assets against those standards. The Data Governance Specialist will work closely with other members of the data team to manage data governance and data quality.

 



Key responsibilities

  • Articulate the data governance mission, strategy, and the value of managing data as an asset

  • Roll out and continuously improve the enterprise data lifecycle management framework, with a focus on data usability, availability, quality, efficiency, data insights and maximum value from data to drive revenue, optimize processes, ensure compliance, and reduce costs

  • Lead the set up of data domain groups formed to make enterprise-wide decisions about data

  • Facilitate a consistent and transparent data decision-making process that brings together business and IT data stakeholders

  • Publish and maintain data governance rules and approvals

  • Draft and gain approval for clear, accurate, and succinct data standards that capture data governance rules and requirements for the data

  • Lead the design of master data authoring processes

  • Provide data governance education and training on core data concepts, practices, standards, and guidelines

  • Propose and gain approval of metrics to monitor data quality against data standards

  • Ensure that the data management and metadata management strategies are implemented and reflected in data standards and practices

  • Help define and manage clear roles and responsibilities related to data management and ensure accountability for stewardship of company’s principal information assets

  • Provide requirements and process consultation to business area management and staff for all aspects of Data Governance

  • Properly prioritize business and enterprise demands and accurately translate business requirements and functionality

  • Accurately measure the contribution of Data Governance activities to business value

  • Manage ambiguity and create accurate estimates related to Data Governance deliverables

  • Responds to unfamiliar, undefined, unexpected, or unstable situations in a professional way

  • Assist with writing documentation and user training materials

  • Effective in building and sustaining relationships with business partners, professional peers, and other TELUS Digital team members

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or 5 years of experience in related field

  • Specialized training in Data Management and Data Governance preferred

  • Strong understanding of data governance principles and practices

  • Must have strong change management orientation, skills, and experience

  • Expertise in process design, reengineering, and requirements management and documentation methodologies

  • Highly skilled at facilitation and building consensus among diverse groups of stakeholders

  • Must be a self-starter

  • Demonstrated creative thinking and analytical skills

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to translate complex topics to any audience

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
